Award Winning Dementia Care Driven by Neurodiversity and Inclusive Design
Three decades designing specialist hospital care.
We have worked at Addenbrooke’s Hospital for more than 30 years, delivering redevelopment, refurbishment and newbuild projects that support clinical need, minimise disruption and enhance some of the most specialist care pathways in the UK. Our longstanding role under the Trust’s framework has enabled a continuity of knowledge and a deep understanding of how the hospital operates.

Teenage Cancer Trust Unit
We transformed an older part of the central hospital into a dedicated Teenage Cancer Trust ward. The brief was to create a non-institutional environment where young people could feel at home during long treatment journeys. The design balances clinical functionality with comfort, providing social spaces, private rooms, family areas and uplifting interiors tailored to teenagers and their families.
Internal Spatial Redevelopment Works
We redesigned a section of the hospital located between two live clinical departments — a children’s ward below and a surgical ward above. Working in this sensitive location required meticulous planning around safety, noise limits and uninterrupted care. The reconfigured layout improves functionality and connections to adjacent departments, delivered with minimal operational impact.
Paediatric Development
This project combined the refurbishment of two 1970s floors with a new three storey courtyard building to create a significantly improved paediatric environment. It includes new inpatient wards, outpatient facilities and a fully equipped Paediatric Intensive Care Department. A traditional procurement route allowed work to proceed with minimal shutdowns to neighbouring clinical services. The updated layout improves clinical flows, provides more comfortable family spaces and gives staff modern, flexible treatment areas.
Occupational Health Development
This standalone building creates a new gateway presence at the hospital entrance. Passive ventilation and careful site planning reduce operational energy while maintaining year-round comfort. Inside, calm and accessible spaces support staff wellbeing and provide an inviting setting for consultations and specialist assessments.
Intensive Care & High Dependency Unit, CT Suite
A mix of refurbished space and modular construction delivered a new CT suite, consulting rooms and additional ward areas within the cardiology department. Because the service is operated by Regents Park Heart Clinics, the project required coordination across multiple clinical teams. Improved adjacencies enable faster patient flow between diagnostics, treatment and monitoring, while modular elements helped reduce onsite disruption.
Neurology
This multiphase programme upgraded wards and critical care areas across five floors of the neurology department. Phase one introduced a new firefighting lift and staircase to improve vertical movement and emergency resilience. Subsequent phases delivered modern ward environments tailored to neurological care, prioritising clear sightlines, acoustic separation and controllable lighting.

Central Theatre Refurbishment
Beginning with a feasibility study to explore options for enlarging theatres to meet HBN compliance, the project evolved into a full refurbishment. Temporary decant theatre space was created to maintain surgical capacity throughout. The refurbished theatres offer higher quality working environments and modern surgical facilities, all achieved within the constraints of the existing department.
A long-term partnership
Our work at Addenbrooke’s spans decades, departments and clinical priorities. From paediatrics to neurology, intensive care to occupational health, each project reflects the Trust’s commitment to exceptional patient care — and our commitment to designing environments that are clear, calm and human. Together, these projects demonstrate what long-term collaboration can achieve: a hospital estate that continues to evolve, adapt and deliver world class care for the communities it serves.
