Designing a specialist school where every learner can thrive.
A school built around wellbeing, skills and the nature.
Joseph Norton SEMH School is a new 132-place specialist school being developed in collaboration with Kirklees Council and Wellspring Academy Trust. The project will create much-needed additional special school places for children and young people aged 4–18, supporting pupils with Social, Emotional and Mental Health (SEMH) needs and providing a high-quality, therapeutic learning environment close to home.
At the heart of the school is a strong concept rooted in farming and horticulture, recognising the positive relationship many autistic pupils develop with animals and the natural environment. All age groups have direct access to the farm, which forms a central spine through the site and connects a series of interconnected learning clusters.
Vocational and practical spaces run along this spine, including the hall, multi-skills workshop and teaching rooms. These spaces support hands-on learning and help pupils build confidence and independence.

A café provides a welcoming point of connection for parents and the local community. The farm is designed to operate year-round, with a separate entrance allowing access for parents and the wider community. Together, these elements help embed the school within its surroundings and create meaningful links beyond the classroom.
The result is a distinctive, inclusive learning environment that supports wellbeing, progression and community integration for some of the most vulnerable learners.
