Wisbech Social, Emotional and Mental Health School, Cambridgeshire

Learn

A school that builds skills, confidence and connection.

Wisbech SEMH School provides specialist education for 60 pupils aged 11 to 16, alongside the staff and visiting professionals who support them. The school has been designed around a clear understanding of how pupils experience and move through their environment.

Drawing on our experience of delivering SEMH schools, we approached the design from the perspective of the young people who use it every day. The building recognises each pupil’s individual value and their potential to play an active role in the wider community.

Vocational learning is woven into the heart of the school. Community-facing spaces include a café-style kitchen, where pupils can learn practical skills such as baking and food preparation while interacting with visitors and a retail and production area supports creative and entrepreneurial learning, allowing pupils to make and sell artwork, sculptures and 3D printed objects.

The Trust’s philosophy of nurture was central to the design. The layout supports positive relationships and a sense of security, with linking spaces that offer clear views across inner courtyards and surrounding gardens.

These shared spaces accommodate the main entrance and reception, dining areas, small social and seating zones, and a series of independent living flats. Together, they create a calm, legible environment that supports independence and confidence.

The school also meets Cambridgeshire County Council’s at the time of nearly zero energy building targets. A range of sustainable design measures help reduce energy demand and support long-term operational efficiency.

The result is a nurturing, inclusive school that supports learning, wellbeing and independence, while strengthening connections between pupils and the community around them.
