Transforming a landscape with social homes built for wellbeing.

Berry Brow is a major regeneration project replacing two outdated 16storey residential towers with a new neighbourhood focused on wellbeing, connection and long-term community resilience. Following a competitive tender, Kirklees Council appointed us to lead the redevelopment of this complex and locally significant site.

To support delivery, we assembled a broad consultant team including project managers, quantity surveyors, engineers, landscape architects, ecologists, a principal designer, clerk of works and demolition specialists.

Transforming a landscape with social homes built for wellbeing.

From the outset, we worked with the Council to refine the brief and shape a vision grounded in meaningful engagement with residents, neighbours and key stakeholders. Their insight informed a scheme designed to support a diverse community and reconnect the new homes with established neighbourhoods to the north and south.

A major shift in scale underpins the transformation. Instead of reinstating tall blocks, the proposals reduce building heights from 16 storeys to six, softening the built form, opening up views and creating a more human scaled development that sits comfortably within its surroundings.

The scheme proposes 130 affordable one and two bed social homes across two six storey buildings, positioned on new development platforms created after demolition. These are supported by green spaces, with enhanced natural landscape to the west improving ecological value and strengthening residents’ connection with nature.

Wellbeing is embedded throughout. Homes and communal areas maximise daylight, ventilation and views, while landscaping creates opportunities for play, social interaction and quieter outdoor spaces. Improved routes across the site enable safe, accessible movement for residents and the wider community.

Berry Brow represents more than the replacement of old towers — it is a reimagining of how social housing can support community life. Through collaboration and a people centred approach, the scheme creates a neighbourhood rooted in its context and designed for long-term resilience.

Alongside the housing development, we delivered a suite of Social Value initiatives. These include planting over 7,000 hedgerow plants to boost biodiversity, partnering with EPIKS to improve active travel routes to local schools, and supporting nearby organisations with design services, mentoring, careers events and wellbeing activities such as mental health walks.
