British Gas Business – Centrica, Oxford Business Park

Work

Creating a workplace designed for long-term efficiency.

British Gas Business required a regional headquarters that would significantly cut energy use while providing a modern, flexible workplace. Sustainability guided every design decision, with a clear focus on integrating high performance environmental technologies and creating an environment that supports people, productivity and long term operational efficiency.

Creating a workplace designed for long-term efficiency.

We acted as architect for the 81,470 sq. ft new build office, working across the full project lifecycle. Early collaboration with the contractor ensured environmental ambitions were met without compromising functionality or quality. Our role also included the interior design strategy and complete office fit out.

Energy performance shaped the concept from the outset. Together with British Gas Business, we integrated advanced systems including biomass boilers and a combined solar hot water and photovoltaic strategy. Early feasibility work optimised an east–west orientation to enhance passive solar control, reduce overheating and support the low energy approach.

A biophilic living wall forms the centrepiece of the main atrium — improving air quality, encouraging natural circulation and creating an uplifting daily experience for staff and visitors.

Across the open plan floors, clearly defined zones support collaboration, breakout and focused tasks. Bespoke phone booths and enclosed work pods provide quiet, private spaces, enabling flexible and productive working. Each floor also features thoughtfully designed tea points, giving teams informal places to pause, recharge and connect, strengthening workplace wellbeing and community.

The building achieved an EPC A rating and BREEAM Excellent certification, and received the Sustainability Achievement Award at the Office Agents Society’s annual presentation — recognition of the strong alignment between environmental design, technology and workplace strategy.

Arranged over three storeys with two wings and a central atrium, the headquarters offers flexible, comfort cooled workspace that can adapt to evolving business needs. Externally, its clean, contemporary architecture reflects its energy efficient ethos and integrates seamlessly with the wider Oxford Business Park.

By prioritising long term efficiency and user experience, the project delivers more than an office — it creates a resilient, future focused workplace that supports productivity, attracts talent, and enables ongoing regional growth.
